My husband and I are restoring some of this house's original charm while adding updates. I love to have DIY projects. As many of the house projects as possible will be done by us.J2http://www.blogger.com/profile/01835780580285314382noreply@blogger.comBlogger15125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3675618710036781412.post-2944149334140827222012-12-20T12:45:00.000-08:002012-12-20T12:46:53.159-08:00Cranberries, rich in antioxidants I really like cranberries, like REALLY like them. S when I was out with several friends and a store had these white balls sitting Tudor people to eat and I popped one in my mouth to find outfit was a cranberry I was stoked! A new and delicious way for me to eat cranberries! I decided I had to recreate them.

My parents were coming up for Thanksgiving, and since they share the same love for them as well, what better time to try them.

So this is really quite easy as long as you do NOT burn the chocolate.

You will need:
1 16oz bag of white chocolate chips
1 bag of fresh cranberries
Tooth picks
Parchment or wax paper

Wash the cranberries and pull out any of the bad ones (soft, brown, etc) and dry them off.

Melt all the chocolate chips on LOW heat on the stove top, feel free to use a double boiler if you have one. I would recommend NOT using the microwave its too easy to burn part of the chocolate. You will know that you burnt the chocolate because it starts to get clumpy, almost like it isn't melting. It doesn't taste bad or smell bad like regular chocolate does when you burn it. It just won't be smooth.

Put tooth picks in the cranberries and dip them in. I leave a little showing at the top because I think it looks ore festive, and I think it looks weird to have a hole in the chocolate.

Put them on the paper and let dry, serve and enjoy!J2http://www.blogger.com/profile/01835780580285314382noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3675618710036781412.post-12315173711929346982012-09-10T20:00:00.001-07:002012-09-11T14:19:01.943-07:00DIY: Front Door Help Tutorial I have a VERY boring front door. I want to paint it navy blue, but have not gotten around to it. My quick fix was to add something on the door. Its not fully finished, but for now it will do.

I really like wreathes, but don't like the "attempt to look real" wreathes. I have an abundance of grape vines in the back yard and I am holding off making wreathes until I can prune them. So for now I made an "L" for the front door (L for our last name).

Materials:
Jute/Hemp or some sort of textured string, thicker works better
hot glue
wooden letter
scissors
This craft cost me under $10, and it took me less than 30 minutes. I have added some fabric flowers on the lower left side. Although Hubby says the flowers were too girly....
Hubby wanted a big wall calendar, but I could never find one that I liked, and I always struggled with remembering to but one before the first of the year. Our wonderful carpenter did such a great job of following through with all of my random requests for our house, one of the last things he did before he left was put in a little table/shelf/counter by our back door. It was a perfect to try and keep hubby and myself on top of communicating and organized.
See how sad that area was by the back door? It looks so much better with it up, and of course my birch bark pencil holder. Hubby and I now have a "command center."
I hope you enjoy making this as much as I did, and whoever thought a picture frame, free paint swatches and a dry erase marker.
This was and still is going to be a long long project... Like the rest of our house it has potential, I feel like that is the story of my life.

Recently Hubby found out the history about the house. Well recent history that is. The people who had it last inherited it from their mother. From what we have pieced together from the neighbors and from doing some internet/facebook searches it was the Mom who cared about the yard, and her daughter/son-in-law not so much. From what the neighbors said the back corner was turned into an outdoor car garage.

Thank goodness for my parents coming to visit and helping get the backyard in order. A large section of the back fence was missing, fixed. The grape vines had not been pruned and were crushing a wire arch, pruned and redirected. The random orange fence, gone. The partial fenced area, gone. New grass seed, planted. invasive species that threatened to take over, gone.

Hubby is gone away on business so its me, the dog and the new old house.... Thank goodness for our amazing carpenters! Holy wah are they moving fast! On Monday the carpenters were going to widen a door way. That was really all they were suppose to do. I left to go check in on something for work, came back two hours later and the door was widen and they were looking for more projects. Drum roll please.....
Since they were moving so quickly and looking for projects until the drywall got there they found some projects for us to do. We took out the lath and plaster on 5 walls, and two ceilings. 1 ceiling, and 3 of the walls were taken out in one night, and let me tell you it was a long night! The others were taken out the next night, after the hubby had left on his trip.
We discovered a lot by opening up those walls, things like a vent had two holes in it, our load bearing wall was missing several support beams, and other fun things like that. Our carpenters now have more work. Thank goodness they are amazingly fast and fun to be around!
I love recycling, and reusing as much as I can. So what is one to do who wants to not create more waste, and wants to remodel?!

well there are some very good solutions to that these days :)

Unfortunately I did not do my homework as thoroughly as I should have. I knew plastics 1-5 could be recycled where I live, I knew aluminum could be recycled, I knew steel could be recycled, and the copper we would be removing could be sold.

So as we started tearing down stuff we separated some of it. We also asked the electricians to separate their trash into recyclable and non-recyclable items. I think they started to do this, and then stopped. I got part way through one of their garbage cans full of the non-useable items yesterday and found a lot of items that could be recycled. Still have a ways to go with sorting through those cans... The carpet was getting pulled up and I assumed that had be trashed, the old linoleum flooring, tile flooring and panels that were on the walls all were getting tossed. Hubby said to separate the panels that were wood and put them into a 'burn' pile.

On Friday the dump trailer was delivered. I started to really realize how much stuff was going to be going to a dump yard. I started to get worried about how much impact I was going to have. So, to Google I went. I discovered Hubby and I were on the right track of separating some of the stuff. What I did learn that Habitat for Humanity Resale stores will actually come through before you start your remodeling and take anything that they can resell. How cool is that?! I also started going through some of the other piles that we made and pulled out any wood item to add to the burn pile (Hubby has a camp out with a bunch of people at the start of the summer and they are always looking for fire wood).

Above is the dump trailer with a good portion of our trash. Had I been more diligent on my homework I am convinced there would be less in there. My new favorite recycling website is this: 1800recycling.com. All you have to do is enter your zip code and then it gives you all different answers for your craziest recycling question. They have 10 different categories covered, ranging from yard waster, to plastics, to automotive. Its pretty sweet, check it out. I found out that if our carpet had not been so nasty I could have given it away to be reused.

I have been getting a little frustrated after finding plastic water bottles on several window sills left over from the electicians. So to help encorage everyone to recycle while they are there was this:

there was a lot of cardboard and paper from packaging that I pulled out of the trash this weekend while loading the dump trailer so that all ended up in "the box" as well.

Hopefully I can stay on top of reducing the waste going in to the landfill from here on out. I proposed my new idea for household trash and how to reduce it to Hubby tonight, seeing since he sometimes thinks I am a bit eccentric with my ideas we will see if I can convince him to see it all the way through. More on my idea later.J2http://www.blogger.com/profile/01835780580285314382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3675618710036781412.post-63263497700415047972012-02-02T11:17:00.000-08:002012-02-02T11:17:54.183-08:00InspirationAfter much debate (in my head) I think I have made up my mind on the rooms colors for the upstairs. I had the idea of what I wanted to do for the master bedroom, and master bathroom (Lake Superior themed) I just need some help with making it coherent with the rest of the upstairs. A friend told me about the website design-seed.com. One of the coolest websites I have been to. You should check it out. That got me thinking about choosing a picture from my Lake Superior trip to pull colors for the other two rooms upstairs.

So here is my inspiration for the rooms upstairs.
What do you think? What has inspired your rooms?J2http://www.blogger.com/profile/01835780580285314382noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3675618710036781412.post-22725411766946475012012-01-29T20:19:00.000-08:002012-01-29T20:46:16.082-08:00Goodbye Kitchen! So on our fifth day of owning the house (well 4.5 we didn't sign until midway through on the 23) we decided that it was time to say goodbye to the kitchen cabinets. We have friends who are helping with the dry wall and they suggested to take it out because it would be a lot easier to drywall. Not too much arm twisting was needed because that means this girl gets a new kitchen! Luckily we also have another friend who volunteered their time to help take out the cabinets, little did he know that it was going to be an all day event.
What are we doing with all the Coca-Cola stuff you ask... well we are going to be selling it. They are really cool looking when it comes to it, it really is just not for us especially since Hubby likes Pepsi.
Our other find today was another layer of wallpaper, 50's? 60's? The reflective wallpaper we are most certain its from the 70's, just not sure about this one.

Since Hubby and his friend were being manly in the kitchen I was not allowed to join in any of the fun. Well, having to go to work took up a large chunk of my day. Although, I started cleaning the walls and taping out the new closet that is going in the master bedroom.

In 4.5 days we have torn out the kitchen, all the trim in the living/dining room and the entry way. Taken out the cabinets in the downstairs bathroom, torn off all the paneling, besides the pieces that are stuck behind window treatments of have lights attached, and tore out all the drywall in the basement. We are tired!J2http://www.blogger.com/profile/01835780580285314382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3675618710036781412.post-34526897083254993352012-01-27T19:13:00.000-08:002012-01-27T19:25:43.144-08:00Under the Layers

In our kitchen we were wondering what to do with the floor. Many ideas have been tossed around, and none that we had settled on. The one thing we knew we wanted to do was get rid of the two layers of linoleum. However we discovered that there were more to what met the eye. So under two layers of linoleum, plywood, ceramic tile, and tar paper is.... wait for it, wait for it MAPLE HARDWOOD FLOORING! it matches the rest of the floor on the downstairs.

When we started searching for houses we were "just looking." I say it like that because I had been looking for almost a year, Hubby said we needed to wait, well I do not do the best on waiting. When he gave me the green light to start to "look" I sent requests out for more information to see some houses. A month later we were shown our now house. Hubby had originally wanted to wait until next year :)

The house we bought was built in 1890, a mere 40 years after the city was founded. That is super cool, there is just so much history in our house. Unfortunately the history has been covered up by carpet, tiles, wallpaper and paneling. The carpeting, paneling, wallpaper, and tile is not at all something we want to keep.J2http://www.blogger.com/profile/01835780580285314382noreply@blogger.com0
